Can I apply for a SASSA grant online?
Only the SRD grant, at srd.sassa.gov.za. Every permanent grant — Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency, Grant-in-Aid and War Veterans — must be applied for in person at a SASSA office.

How much does it cost to apply?
Nothing. Applying, the medical assessment, appealing and reinstatement are all free. Any request for payment is a scam.

Do my documents need to be certified copies?
Take the originals. SASSA officers see the original and copy what they need. Certified copies are useful as a backup but do not replace the original at the interview.

How recent must bank statements be?
Three months, covering every active account — including fixed deposits and investment accounts. Statements are how the means test is verified, so an incomplete set is the most common cause of a delay.

Can I use my own doctor's report instead?
No — the assessment must be done by a doctor appointed by the state. Your doctor's report is important supporting evidence and you should bring it, but it does not replace the assessment.
How long is a SASSA medical assessment valid?
Three months from the date of the assessment. If your application is delayed past that, the assessment has to be redone.
How much is the Child Support Grant in 2026?
R580 per child per month from 1 April 2026, up from R560. A relative caring for an orphaned child can claim R860* with the top-up — that figure is marked * until we trace it to the Gazette.

Can a grandmother claim the Child Support Grant?
Yes. Any primary caregiver may claim — no court order and no parental consent are required. What proof works.
