A SASSA review letter means your grant was flagged by expanded data-matching — SASSA now cross-checks credit bureaus, banks, SARS, NSFAS, government payroll and correctional services. It is not an accusation and not a suspension — but it becomes one if you ignore it. Attend with your documents before the deadline in your letter and most reviews end with the grant continuing.

SASSA grant review 2026 explained: around 400,000 grants flagged, what to bring to your review appointment, and the 90-day reinstatement window if your grant is suspended.
SASSA grant review: your letter, the deadline, and what to bring — verified 2026-07-29 by the SA Benefits editorial team.

Why you were selected

The data-matching flags any signal of undeclared means: deposits in your bank account, a SARS record, appearing on a payroll, a credit profile inconsistent with declared income. Many flags are explainable — once-off family support, a relative's funeral policy paying out, stokvel money — but the system cannot know that until you explain it, in person, with proof.

What the letter is telling you

Element in the letterWhat it means
'Your grant has been identified for review'A database flag — the grant continues while you comply
The deadline (commonly 30 days from the notice)The date by which you must appear — this is the part that suspends grants
Where to attendUsually your local SASSA office; some reviews allow booked appointments
Documents requestedBring everything listed, plus the items below

What to bring to your review

Bring originals plus certified copies where copies are required. What you need depends on your grant, but the core list is the same for everyone:

  • A valid South African ID — 13-digit barcoded book or smart ID card. Your spouse's ID may also be required.
  • Proof of income — recent payslips or pension slips, or an affidavit if you are unemployed or no longer earning.
  • Bank statements for the last three months for every active bank, savings and investment account.
  • Proof of residence — a municipal account, utility bill, or a letter from a traditional authority or ward councillor.
  • Proof of marital status where relevant: marriage certificate, divorce order, a spouse's death certificate, or an affidavit in cases of separation or desertion.
  • Grant-specific documents — children's birth certificates for the Child Support Grant, school attendance confirmation where required, and death certificates where a death affects the grant.
  • Anything else named in your review SMS or notification letter.

Keep your details current — reviews arrive by SMS

SASSA notifies beneficiaries selected for review by SMS, using only the contact details on its database. If your number has changed, you will never see the notice — and non-attendance is what suspends grants. Tell SASSA promptly whenever any of these change:

  • Your cellphone number, residential address or other contact details.
  • Your marital status.
  • Your financial circumstances or income.
  • Travel outside South Africa's borders.
  • Anything else that could affect your eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is the review letter itself possibly a scam?

Verify before acting: real reviews are confirmable on 0800 60 10 11, happen at SASSA offices, and never involve paying anything or sharing OTPs. Any 'review' by phone/WhatsApp asking for card numbers is theft — scam guide.

Does the grant pay during the review?

Yes, until and unless it is suspended. Reviews only stop payment after the deadline passes or a disqualifying finding is made.

I received SRD, not a permanent grant. Same process?

SRD runs its own monthly checks instead of formal reviews — see SRD declines. This page covers reviews of permanent grants.

What's changed on this page (2)
  1. Added SASSA's official review guidance: beneficiaries under review are paid on the fourth payment day rather than in the normal three-day cycle, the full document checklist, the duty to keep contact and circumstance details current, and the procurator option for beneficiaries unable to travel.

  2. Published during the current review drive. Figures for beneficiaries notified, reviewed and suspended reflect the latest official reporting and will be updated as SASSA releases new numbers.
