The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant pays R370 per month to South Africans aged 18–60 who are unemployed and have income below R624 a month. It is administered by SASSA (the South African Social Security Agency), applied for online at srd.sassa.gov.za, and re-assessed every month. It is free to apply, check and appeal.

Who qualifies
You must be 18–60, living in South Africa, unemployed, receiving no UIF or NSFAS support, holding no other SASSA grant for yourself, and have less than R624 entering your bank account in the month. How the monthly cycle works
- You apply once
Online at srd.sassa.gov.za — or by WhatsApp or USSD. Application walkthrough.
- SASSA checks the databases monthly
Bank inflows, UIF, NSFAS, government payroll, Home Affairs and more — every month, for every applicant.
- Your status updates
Approved (with a pay date), Pending, or Declined with a reason. What each status means.
- Payment follows approval
Into your bank account or via the other payment methods. Unpaid approved months become backpay.
The 2027 outlook
SRD funding runs to March 2027, and government is redesigning it into a work-linked Livelihoods Support Grant — a draft went to Cabinet for public comment in August 2026, with detail expected at the October 2026 MTBPS. Frequently asked questions
Is the SRD grant still R350?
No. The amount increased to R370 per month from April 2024 and remains R370 as at July 2026.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No — one application stays active and is re-assessed monthly. You only reapply if you cancelled, or SASSA asks you to reconfirm your details. See reapply.
Can I get SRD and a Child Support Grant?
Yes, if the CSG is for a child in your care — it is the child's grant, not yours. You cannot hold SRD alongside a grant for yourself (like Disability). See existing grant declines.
