Declined for SRD? Everything you can still claim
On this page (8 sections)
An SRD decline closes one door of many. Right now you can: appeal the decline (free, 90 days), check whether you qualify for a bigger grant you've overlooked, apply for SASSA food parcels (a separate programme with no database checks), register as indigent for free electricity and water, and claim school fee exemption for your children. Work down this list in order.
1. Appeal — if the decline is wrong
Many declines rest on stale databases and are winnable. Check what your decline reason actually means — then appeal within 90 days, separately for each declined month. Appeals are free and don't block anything else on this list.
2. The grant you might be missing
| If this is you | You may qualify for | Worth |
|---|---|---|
| Caring for any child under 18 — yours or a relative's | Child Support Grant | R590* per child, monthly |
| 60 or older | Older Persons Grant | ±R2,400* monthly |
| Illness or disability stops you working | Disability Grant | ±R2,400* monthly |
| Fostering a child by court order | Foster Child Grant | R1,290* monthly |
| Worked formally in the last 4 years | UIF credits — guide coming, see roadmap | Up to months of partial salary |
The Child Support Grant is the big one: it is the most under-claimed grant in the country, it has no bearing on your SRD decline (different means test, and receiving it for a child doesn't block SRD), and R590* per child beats R370 for you.
3. Food support — no database checks
SASSA food parcels are the in-kind Social Relief of Distress — the same programme name as the R370, but a completely separate application: in person at a SASSA office, assessed by a social worker on your actual situation, not by bank-account scans. An SRD decline does not block it. Community food banks need no application at all.
4. Cut your bills to near zero
Register as indigent with your municipality and a low-income household gets free basic electricity, free water, and rates/refuse rebates — worth hundreds of rand monthly. About 2 million households qualify; under a quarter claim. One registration unlocks all of it.
5. School costs
Fee-charging school? The school fee exemption is a legal right calculated from a statutory formula — if fees exceed a set share of your income, exemption is partial to full. No-fee schools (quintiles 1–3) charge nothing at all. Guides arrive with the basic-needs education cluster — track it on the roadmap; meanwhile the school's bursar must accept an exemption application on request.
6. While you wait: keep the SRD door open
- You stay in the system — each new month is re-assessed. Understand the means test so a family transfer doesn't cost you next month too.
- Keep your phone number and bank details current so a won appeal pays out immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Will applying for other help hurt my appeal?
No. The appeal is decided on the databases for the declined month. Food parcels, indigent status and child grants have no effect on it.
I have literally nothing today. What's fastest?
Same-day: a food bank or community kitchen — no application. This week: the food parcel assessment at your SASSA office. This month: appeal + CSG + indigent registration.
