SASSA food parcels: the other Social Relief of Distress

SASSA runs two programmes called Social Relief of Distress: the R370 monthly grant, and this one — in-kind relief (food parcels, vouchers or cash, depending on province) for households in undue hardship, granted for up to three months and extendable by three more. It is applied for in person at a SASSA office (no online form exists), assessed by a social worker on your actual circumstances — not by bank-account scans — and it is free to apply.
Who it's for
- Households in undue hardship: the breadwinner died or was recently unemployed, a disaster (fire, flood) struck, or you await grant payments that haven't started.
- People medically unfit to work for under 6 months (too short for the Disability Grant).
- Families where appliances of survival failed — the assessment is genuinely case-by-case.
What to bring
- Your 13-digit barcoded ID (green book or smart card).
- Birth certificates for children in the household.
- Proof of income — or an affidavit that there is none.
- Proof of residence if you have it.
- A short written motivation of the hardship (the social worker helps shape this).
- Missing a document? A commissioned affidavit substitutes — free at any police station. Missing papers must not stop you applying.
The process

- The social worker assessment
An interview about your household, income and the hardship. Honest detail helps — this is a human judgement, not a database check.
- The award
Approved relief comes as a food parcel, voucher or short-term cash payment depending on your province, typically monthly for up to 3 months.
- The extension
If hardship continues, ask for the extension before the third month ends — up to 3 further months.
While you're at the office
One trip can do triple duty: apply for the Child Support Grant for children in your care, and ask about reinstating any suspended grant. Bring the same documents. And if the parcel route can't help fast enough, community food banks need no application at all.

Can I get food parcels AND the R370 grant?
The in-kind relief targets those without other support — receiving the grant usually excludes parcels for the same period. But applicants awaiting first payment, or declined applicants, are exactly who it's for.
How fast does help arrive?
Genuine emergencies can be assessed quickly — sometimes within days. State the urgency clearly and ask when to return.
Does applying cost anything or affect other applications?
Free, always (never pay), and it has no effect on any grant application or appeal.
