If you're unemployed in South Africa, your baseline claim is the R370 SRD grant — but the full stack is bigger: UIF if you worked formally in the last four years, the Child Support Grant for each child in your care, indigent registration for free electricity and water, food support, and free healthcare at public clinics. Here's the order that gets the most money flowing soonest.
Step 1: The SRD grant (everyone starts here)
Ages 18–60, income under R624/month: apply online in 10 minutes — free, no documents. Already applied? Check your status. Declined? That's often fixable.
Step 2: Worked before? UIF may owe you more
If you were formally employed — even domestic or farm work — your employer's UIF contributions earned you credits: up to 12 months of partial salary, worth far more than SRD. Claims must be lodged within 12 months of unemployment, so don't sit on it. Step 3: Children in your care = grants per child
The Child Support Grant pays R590* per child to the primary caregiver — you don't need to be the biological parent, and it stacks with your own SRD. Two children changes your household income more than any other single application on this page.
Step 4: Cut the bills — indigent registration
One indigent register application at your municipality unlocks free basic electricity, free water and rates/refuse rebates for low-income households. It's the most under-claimed benefit in the country.

- Immediate need: food banks and community kitchens — no application.
- This week: SASSA food parcels — social-worker assessed, up to 3 months of support.
