If a physical or mental condition stops you working for more than six months, your main claim is the Disability Grant (±R2,400*/month) — awarded through a SASSA medical assessment, not your diagnosis alone. While that application runs, the R370 SRD grant can bridge the gap, and free healthcare (H0) covers your treatment. If you need someone's full-time care, Grant-in-Aid adds to the grant.

The main claim: the Disability Grant

Ages 18–59 (from 60, the Older Persons Grant takes over). Three gates: a medical assessment by a state-appointed doctor confirming you cannot support yourself through work; the means test on income and assets; and the in-person application. Assessments distinguish temporary awards (6–24 months, renewable) from permanent ones — most first awards are temporary, which surprises people at renewal time.

While the application runs: the bridge

  • SRD grant — you can receive R370/month while the Disability application is pending, since you hold no grant yet. Once Disability is approved, SRD ends (the rule).
  • Free healthcare — unable-to-work patients typically classify H0 (free) at public facilities; the full guide is coming. Bring proof of no income to classification.
  • Food parcels — medical hardship is exactly what the social-worker assessment considers.
  • Indigent registration — free basic electricity and water while income is gone.

If you need full-time care

Grant-in-Aid adds R560* monthly to an existing Disability, Older Persons or War Veterans grant when a doctor confirms you need regular care from another person. It is claimed with, not instead of, your main grant. Caring for a child with a severe disability? That's the Care Dependency Grant — ±R2,400*, separate from this path.

If the Disability Grant is declined

Declines are commonly on medical-assessment grounds and are appealable to the Independent Tribunal — the appeal guide is arriving with the Phase 2 grant pages. Meanwhile the bridge benefits above keep running, and a re-application with better medical evidence is always open.

Frequently asked questions

Is a terminal illness handled differently?

The route is the same Disability Grant, but assessments for terminal and severe conditions should be prioritised — say so when booking, and ask your clinic to state prognosis clearly in the file.

Can I work part-time on a Disability Grant?

Limited earnings are possible within the means test, but the assessment is about capacity for work — get advice before taking on regular work, as reviews check payroll data (grant reviews).
