A Declined SRD status means one of the government databases SASSA checks flagged you as not qualifying for that month. Many declines are wrong — outdated UIF records, once-off bank deposits counted as income, lapsed NSFAS records — and you have 90 days to appeal each declined month, free, at srd.dsd.gov.za.

Chart of the 10 official SASSA SRD decline reasons, the government database that triggers each one, and whether the decline is commonly wrong.

The three moves after any decline

  1. Understand the reason

Open the guide for your exact reason above. Some declines are correct and not worth appealing; many are based on stale data and are very winnable.

  2. Fix the underlying record, then appeal

The Tribunal re-runs the same database checks. If UIF, NSFAS or Home Affairs holds wrong data about you, correcting it first is what makes the appeal succeed. Then lodge the appeal within 90 days.

  3. Claim what you qualify for meanwhile

An appeal takes weeks to months. Support after an SRD decline walks through grants, food support and free basic services you may be entitled to right now.

Frequently asked questions

Does a decline affect my future months?

No. SRD eligibility is assessed fresh every month. You stay in the system and each new month is checked on its own.

Can I fix a decline without appealing?

No — for a declined month, only an appeal (or the Tribunal) can reverse the outcome for that month. But fixing the underlying record stops future months being declined for the same reason.

Someone offered to reverse my decline for a fee. Is that real?

It is a scam, always. Appeals are free at srd.dsd.gov.za and nobody outside the Tribunal can change an outcome. See you never pay.
