“NSFAS registered” means the National Student Financial Aid Scheme database lists you as a funded student for the assessed period, so SASSA treats your allowances as income. If you are no longer funded — or never actually received funding — the decline rests on a stale record.
Is this decline commonly wrong?
Often. Common false positives: funding approved but never taken up, deregistration mid-year, funding withdrawn after failing the academic criteria, or completion of studies with the record not yet closed. In each case you receive no NSFAS money, yet the database still lists you.
Evidence that overturns it
- A letter from NSFAS confirming your funding status has ended (request via the myNSFAS portal).
- Proof of deregistration from your institution.
- A completion/graduation letter if your studies have ended.
How to appeal
Lodge your appeal on the official appeals portal at srd.dsd.gov.za within 90 days of the outcome — and separately for each month that was declined. No — the rules treat NSFAS funding as financial support, so you cannot hold both. If your NSFAS funding genuinely ends, you can apply for SRD from the following month.
