Every SASSA process is free. Applying, checking status, appealing, reinstating, changing details, collecting payment — all of it, always. There are no premium queues, no processing fees, no agents with connections. Anyone charging you is committing fraud, and paying them can also hand over the details that hijack your grant.

SASSA scam warning showing the three fraud patterns targeting grant recipients: fake status-check websites, fees charged for free services, and one-time PIN theft.
You never pay for a grant — not to apply, appeal, or 'unlock' — verified 2026-07-28 by the SA Benefits editorial team.

The fee scams making the rounds

The pitchThe truth
'R150 and I'll submit your application properly'The application is 10 free minutes on your own phone — and doing it on someone else's device gives them your credentials
'Appeal consultants' with 'tribunal contacts'Appeals are free at srd.dsd.gov.za and decided by database re-checks — contacts are irrelevant
'Release fee' to unlock a stuck paymentStuck payments have specific free fixes; no fee releases anything
'Registration renewal fee' via WhatsAppNo such fee exists; reconfirmation is free on the portal
Queue-jumping fees at officesReport it — 0800 60 10 11. Office services are free

Why 'helpers' are the expensive option

Beyond the fee, an 'agent' who applies for you controls the phone number on the application — which means every OTP, every banking change and every collection PIN routes through them. Grant hijacking usually starts as paid 'help'. If you need genuine help, use a family member you trust on your own SIM, or ask staff at a SASSA office — free.

Already paid someone?

  1. Assume they hold your credentials

If they applied 'for you', change the registered number to yours and verify your banking details.

  2. Report the fraud

SASSA on 0800 60 10 11, and SAPS for a case number — these reports are how syndicates get shut down.

  3. Don't pay 'recovery' scammers next

Victims get targeted again by 'agents' offering to recover the money for a fee. Same scam, second round.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to charge for helping with applications?

Charging for access to free government services by misrepresentation is fraud. NGOs and community workers who genuinely assist do so free.

What about airtime/data costs?

The USSD line *134*7737# is free on major networks, and SASSA office help costs nothing. Data for the website is the only real cost — this site is built lightweight for exactly that reason.
