Fake SASSA status-check sites: how to spot one in 10 seconds

The 10-second test: does the address end in .gov.za? The only official SRD status check is at srd.sassa.gov.za. Any other site with a form asking for your ID number and phone number to "check your status" is harvesting exactly the two credentials needed to hijack your grant — that's why the form exists.
How the harvest becomes a hijack
- You 'check your status' on the fake site
It may even show a real-looking result — some fakes query the official portal with your details to keep you convinced.
- They hold your ID + registered number pair
That pair is the key to the SRD system: status, banking changes, verifications.
- They intercept or socially engineer the OTP
A follow-up call ('SASSA verification') gets the code, or a SIM-swap gets the number itself.
- Your banking details change; the grant flows to them
Weeks pass before most victims notice missing payments.
Spotting a fake beyond the URL
- Heavy ads around a status form — the official portal has none.
- 'Check all your grants' promises — no such combined check exists; only SRD has an online status check.
- Urgency banners ('verify now or lose your payment') — SASSA never does this.
- WhatsApp groups or Facebook pages doing 'checks' for you — sharing your ID with a stranger is the scam itself.
