Fixing failed SRD identity verification, step by step
On this page (5 sections)
When your SRD application fails identity verification (or shows Referred), SASSA needs to confirm you are really the person behind the ID number. The fix is SASSA's online identity verification — a facial-recognition check against Home Affairs records — plus correcting any mismatched details at Home Affairs. Do this before appealing: appeals re-run the same check.
Step 1: Complete SASSA's online verification
- Request the link
On srd.sassa.gov.za, open the identity verification section for your application (it appears when verification is required) and confirm your registered phone number.
- Follow the SMS link
SASSA sends a secure link to your registered number. Open it on a phone with a working front camera.
- Do the face scan
Good light, plain background, no hat or glasses. The system matches your face against your Home Affairs photo.
- Wait for the result
Verification results typically reflect within days; your next monthly assessment then uses the verified identity.
Step 2: If verification keeps failing
Repeated failure usually means the Home Affairs record itself is the problem — an old photo, or details that don't match your application:
- Green ID book with a decades-old photo: the face match can genuinely fail. Upgrading to a smart ID card refreshes your photo and biometrics at Home Affairs — and first-time smart IDs for citizens 60+ are free (otherwise R140).
- Name/surname mismatch (marriage, spelling): correct it at Home Affairs, then redo verification.
- Someone else used your ID to apply: completing verification proves you are the real owner and reclaims the application. Also report it on 0800 60 10 11.
Step 3: Appeal the months you lost
Verification fixes the future; it does not automatically reverse past declined months. Lodge an appeal for each month declined on identity grounds, within 90 days of each outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is the verification link a scam?
The genuine link arrives by SMS only after you request it on srd.sassa.gov.za. A link arriving out of nowhere — especially via WhatsApp — is phishing. Spot the fakes.
How long until my grant pays after verification?
Your next monthly assessment uses the verified identity; approved months then pay in the normal cycle, with prior approved-but-unpaid months as backpay.
