SASSA's Eastern Cape regional office is in East London, at BKB Building, cnr Fitzpatrick and Merino Road, Quigney, East London 5200. It is the province's administrative and escalation office — not where you apply for a grant. Applications, reviews and banking-detail changes are handled by the local service office serving the area you live in. Call 0800 60 10 11 and give your area, and they will tell you which local office that is and what to bring.

Finding your local office in Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape has some of the longest travel distances to a service office in the country, particularly in the former Transkei and Ciskei districts around Mthatha, Lusikisiki, Bizana and Butterworth. Local service offices sit in the main towns, and mobile units cover the villages between them on a published schedule the local office holds.

  1. Call 0800 60 10 11 with your area

The call centre names the local service office covering where you live, its address and its hours. This is the most reliable route and it costs nothing.

  2. Check SASSA's own service-office list

SASSA publishes its service offices at sassa.gov.za/contact/sassa-service-offices, and its head office and regional contacts at sassa.gov.za/contact/head-office-and-regional.

  3. Ask locally

Your municipal offices, clinic, school or ward councillor deal with SASSA constantly and generally know the nearest office and when the mobile unit visits.

If missing documents are the blockage — a birth certificate, an ID that was never collected — fix that first at Home Affairs, because it unblocks the grant, school registration and clinic records in one trip rather than three.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the SASSA office in Eastern Cape?

The regional office is at BKB Building, cnr Fitzpatrick and Merino Road, Quigney, East London 5200, East London — telephone 043 707 6300. It is an administrative office. To apply for a grant you need the local service office for the area you live in: call 0800 60 10 11 and give your area.

Can I apply for a grant at the regional office?

No. Applications are handled by the local service office serving your home address. The regional office is for provincial administration and for escalating complaints a local office has not resolved.

Are SASSA offices open on Saturdays?

No. Offices operate on weekdays only and are closed on public holidays. Postbank card replacement sites inside supermarkets run Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00.

What must I take with me?

At minimum your 13-digit bar-coded ID or smart ID card, plus the documents for your specific grant. The full checklist, and the affidavits that substitute for missing documents, is on documents you need.

What if I cannot travel to an office at all?

Ask about a home visit for the application, and about the mobile units that visit outlying areas. If you need someone to collect payments for you, appoint a procurator.

Regional office details are taken from SASSA's own head office and regional contacts page and were checked against it twice. Office details change from time to time — confirm on 0800 60 10 11 before travelling. Individual local service offices are not listed here because we cannot verify each one; the toll-free line and SASSA's service-office list are the current sources for those.
