Moving provinces with a grant: your grant moves with you

Your grant does not stop when you move. SASSA is a national agency on a single system, payment dates are national rather than provincial, and there is no reapplication. What you must do is update your address and contact details at a SASSA office so that your file follows you — because everything that later goes wrong with a grant starts with SASSA holding details you no longer use.
What to do
- Find the office serving your new address
Call 0800 60 10 11 with the new area, or see SASSA offices.
- Go in with your ID and proof of the new address
A municipal bill, a lease, or a letter from a ward councillor or traditional leader. An affidavit is accepted where none of those exist.
- Ask for your file to be transferred
The office updates your record and takes over administration of the grant. Ask them to confirm the transfer is done before you leave.
- Confirm your cellphone number on the system
Do this in the same visit, even if you think it is right. It is the single most valuable thing on your record.
- Update banking details only if the account changed
If you kept the same account, nothing changes. If you opened a new one, bring proof that it is in your own name — banking changes are only made in person.

Other things worth doing at the same time
- Children changing school? Check no-fee schools and fee exemptions in the new district — thresholds are set per school, so a move can change what you qualify for.
- Municipal services? Indigent registers are run by each municipality, and registration does not transfer. You must register again in the new municipality.
- Clinic and health records? Register at your new local clinic so chronic medication is not interrupted.
- Moving because of work? If a job ended, check UIF before anything else — claims expire twelve months after unemployment begins.
