Can you receive two SASSA grants?
On this page (5 sections)
For yourself, no — you may hold only one grant in your own name. You cannot draw the Older Persons Grant and the Disability Grant together, because they answer the same need. But a household can hold many grants at once: your grant, plus a Child Support Grant for every child in your care, plus Grant-in-Aid added on top of your own grant when you need full-time care. Most households claim less than they are entitled to.
What can and cannot be combined
| Combination | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Older Persons + Disability | No | Both are adult income-replacement grants; you receive one |
| Older Persons + Grant-in-Aid | Yes | R2,400 + R580 — Grant-in-Aid is an add-on for people needing full-time care |
| Disability + Grant-in-Aid | Yes | R2,400 + R580, on the same principle |
| Older Persons + Child Support (for a grandchild) | Yes | Your grant is yours; the child's grant is the child's |
| Child Support for 3 children | Yes | R580 per child — R1,740 a month for three |
| Child Support + Care Dependency for the same child | No | Care Dependency replaces CSG for that child, at a much higher amount |
| Child Support + Foster Child for the same child | No | One grant per child; compare the two routes |
| Foster Child (one child) + Child Support (another child) | Yes | The rule is per child, not per caregiver |
| SRD + any other grant | No | SRD is only for people receiving no other social grant |
| Your grant + your spouse's grant | Yes | Grants are individual, and a spouse's grant is not counted as your income |
What this looks like in a real household
| Household | Grants held | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|
| A grandmother of 67 raising two grandchildren | Older Persons R2,400 + Child Support R580 × 2 | R3,560 |
| A 70-year-old needing full-time care, with one grandchild | Older Persons R2,400 + Grant-in-Aid R580 + Child Support R580 | R3,560 |
| An unemployed mother of three | SRD R370 + Child Support R580 × 3 | R2,110 |
| A couple, both 65, one needing care | Older Persons R2,400 × 2 + Grant-in-Aid R580 | R5,380 |
| An aunt fostering one child and raising her own two | Foster Child R1,290 + Child Support R580 × 2 | R2,450 |
The three combinations most households miss
- Grant-in-Aid on an existing grant. If you already receive Older Persons, Disability or War Veterans and you need another person's help to get through the day, R580 a month is being left unclaimed. It is added to your existing grant — no new application from scratch. How to add it.
- Child Support for a child you are not the parent of. Any primary caregiver may claim: grandparents, aunts, older siblings. No court order, no maintenance order. The proof that works.
- The orphan top-up. A relative caring for an orphaned child can claim the CSG top-up — R860 a month instead of R580, with no court order needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get the Older Persons Grant and the Disability Grant together?
No. Both replace income for an adult, and you receive one of them. From 60 the Older Persons Grant normally takes over from a Disability Grant automatically.
How many Child Support Grants can one person receive?
One per child in your care, with no fixed cap. SASSA verifies the caregiving relationship for each child.
Does my grant affect my spouse's application?
Not as income — a social grant is excluded from the means test. Your other income and joint assets are counted.
Can I get SRD if my child receives the Child Support Grant?
Yes. The child's grant belongs to the child and does not disqualify you, provided you meet the SRD rules yourself.
Does Grant-in-Aid mean two applications?
No. It is added to a grant you already hold, on the strength of a medical report confirming you need full-time care. Apply at your SASSA office.
