SASSA gold cards end on 31 August 2026: what happens if you miss it
On this page (4 sections)
Postbank confirmed that the deadline to replace gold SASSA cards with Postbank black cards was 31 August 2026 and would not be extended. Beneficiaries who did not switch could not access the 2–7 September payment run — but the payments were still made into their accounts and remain there. Replacement sites stayed open after the deadline. A black card is free, needs only a valid SA ID or temporary ID, and can be collected at Postbank sites inside major supermarkets.
What to do now
- Find a replacement site
Dial *120*355# from your cellphone, or ask at Shoprite, Checkers, USave, Pick n Pay, Boxer or SPAR.
- Go on a weekday between 09:00 and 17:00
Replacement sites are open Monday to Friday, nationwide.
- Take a valid SA ID or temporary ID
Nothing else is needed, and there is no fee.
- Check your balance once the card is issued
Any payments made while you had no working card should be available immediately.
Why this happened
The gold card was withdrawn following a cryptographic security breach in 2021, and roughly 2.9 million beneficiaries had to migrate. Earlier deadlines slipped repeatedly — a February 2025 cut-off passed with well under half of beneficiaries switched — which is why many assumed this one would move as well. It did not.
Frequently asked questions
Was the deadline extended?
No. Postbank confirmed it would not move. Replacement sites did stay open afterwards so those who missed it could still migrate.
Did I lose my grant?
No. Payments continue into your account. You cannot access them until you collect a black card.
What does it cost?
Nothing. A valid SA ID or temporary ID is the only requirement.
Who do I call?
Postbank on 0800 5354 55 for card questions; SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 for the grant itself.
