Postbank black card: the migration deadline has passed
On this page (5 sections)
The deadline to swap a gold SASSA card for a Postbank black card was 31 August 2026, and it was not extended. If you missed it: your grant is still being paid into your account — you simply cannot reach the money until you collect a black card. Replacement sites stayed open after the deadline. It is free, takes one visit, and needs only a valid SA ID or temporary ID. Dial *120*355# from your phone to find the nearest site.

Why the migration happened
The gold card had to be withdrawn after a cryptographic security breach in 2021 compromised the card platform. Around 2.9 million beneficiaries needed to move. Earlier deadlines slipped repeatedly — the February 2025 cut-off passed with well under half of beneficiaries migrated — before the final 31 August 2026 date. That history is why so many people assumed this deadline would move too.
Common situations
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| I still have a gold card and cannot draw money | Go to a Postbank site with your ID. The card is issued on the spot and the funds become available |
| I am too ill or frail to travel to a site | Call Postbank 0800 5354 55 and explain; also see collecting for someone else |
| My ID is lost | A temporary ID from Home Affairs is accepted — how to get one |
| I have a black card but the payment is still missing | The card is not the problem — work through payment not received |
| My grant goes to my own bank account | The migration does not affect you. It applies only to SASSA/Postbank cards |
| Someone offered to fetch my card for me | Do not hand over your ID. Only you can collect your own card |
Frequently asked questions
Was the SASSA gold card deadline extended?
No. Postbank confirmed the 31 August 2026 deadline would not move. Replacement sites did, however, stay open afterwards so that people who missed it could still migrate.
I missed the deadline. Have I lost my grant?
No. Payments continue to be deposited into your account. You cannot access them until you collect a black card, at which point the money — including any missed payment run — is available.
How much does a black card cost?
Nothing. It is free, and only a valid SA ID or temporary ID is required.
Where do I find a replacement site?
Dial *120*355# from your cellphone, or ask at a Shoprite, Checkers, USave, Pick n Pay, Boxer or SPAR store.
Can someone collect the card for me?
No. You must collect it yourself with your own ID. If you genuinely cannot travel, call Postbank on 0800 5354 55 to ask what arrangements are possible.
Do I need a new PIN?
You set a PIN when the card is issued. Never share it, and never let anyone else enter it for you.
